Natural Resources Conservation Service
For the last 75 years, the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) has been working with producers and land managers to help the land through scientifically based, voluntary conservation efforts. Upon request, NRCS provides expertise and financial assistance to those interested in protecting and enhancing soil, water, and related natural resources on private lands.
NRCS's natural resources conservation programs help people reduce soil erosion, enhance water supplies, improve water quality, increase wildlife habitat, and reduce damages caused by floods and other natural disasters. Public benefits include enhanced natural resources that help sustain agricultural productivity and environmental quality while supporting continued economic development, recreation, and scenic beauty.
As a farmer or rancher, you work hard to protect the natural resources that support your livelihood. This involves making daily decisions about how to manage costs and improve production on cropland, grazing land and private forest land. Many agricultural producers and land managers choose to implement conservation practices that:
- Reduce input costs
- Improve efficiency
- Solve resource problems
- Maintain or increase yields
- Help meet regulatory requirements; and
- Save time, labor and energy
Often, land managers, agricultural producers and landowners apply for and receive funding and professional expertise to help them plan and install such measures. You, too, may be eligible to obtain expertise and financial assistance through a number of voluntary conservation programs.
